Are you geofencing securemail & data transfers? If not, why not?
Like any security measure, geofencing is just one step of many that you can take to add an additional layer of protection to the PII, intellectual property and user data your organisation works with.
DOQEX for example, has been providing its customers with geofencing defences for many years. Historically part of our operations centre and security posture, this functionality is now accessible to customer admins.
"Geofencing is a simple yet highly effective way to help reduce the risk of your data getting into the wrong hands. We will continue to implement defences directly for the majority of our customers; however, many clients, especially those in finance and healthcare, need additional control and audit capability. For those clients, we are pleased to now offer access to this valuable feature set."
Nick Case, Co-founder of DOQEX
What is geofencing?
In general, geofencing involves establishing a virtual geographic boundary. With regard to securemail & data transfers, it means controlling whether an interaction is allowed to pass in or out to another geographic location.
Geofencing is a very simple way of preventing sensitive data or content transferring out of or into your organisation from an unauthorised destination. Given the fact that most cybercrime is initiated by criminals in countries such as Russia, Ukraine, China, Nigeria and North Korea (to name just five), assuming you only deal with organisations based in the UK or Europe, geofencing all other countries will greatly help reduce your risk to cyber threats.
If you haven’t already seen it, there’s a very handy World Cybercrime Index, mapping the worst cybercrime countries based on a number of key metrics. The index was researched and created by Miranda Bruce and published by the Oxford University in April 2024.
The benefits of geofencing
Data Loss Prevention – Helps prevent sensitive data from being sent to unauthorised recipients and locations.
Anti-phishing & Social Engineering – Blocks emails to regions known for high levels of malicious activity.
Compliance – Helps in meeting regulatory requirements for data protection.
If an employee’s email account is compromised, geofencing helps limit the damage by preventing unauthorised emails from being sent from suspicious locations.
Alerts – Should a user log in to their account from an unauthorised location, admins can be alerted to verify the user.
Additional Security – By adding another layer of security, geofencing contributes to a stronger overall security posture.
